Graphic organizers are great visual tools and we can used them to start of our writing to generate ideas first. Everyone grew up with Concept Webs, Life Cycles, and Venn Diagrams. Here are some unique graphic organizers you might want to use.. choose the ones that will help you write essays, not those that will help you memorise facts!!! (No 1, 2, 3,and 8 )
Finally, we have to our last step. Have you started writing yet? No? Ha ha ha..... well, sometimes I too, get writer's block. But I am lucky, I have been blessed with a natural talent to write. Once the pen is in my hand, (or the keyboards are in touch with my fingerpads, or is it the other way round, nvm!) I can just write off any piece. As for you students or faithful readers, try to use my tips or 10 steps to start off. Of course, my 10 steps are not the end, I can go on to 20 steps even, but for the t ime being, 10 will do. I will try to get my students' sample, after they have finished their exams which starts today (26 July 2010) (Ujian Selaras or standardised tests for Lower 6). Langkah yang ke 10 ialah menggunkan "graphic organizer" untuk menjanakan idea untuk menulis. Cikgu telah habis 10 Langkah untuk kursus : Creative Writing. 10 langkah ini mungkin tidak cukup, dan cigku boleh tambah lagi. Have you written your story yet? Make it as creative as possible! Or at least let it have a happy ending!!! |

Step 10: Use Graphic Organisers Langkah 10 Gunakan Graphic Organiser
STEP 9: Conquer Medical Terms Langkah 9: Menguasai Istilah Perubatan
In your writing, you cannot run away from the fact that sometimes you need to used medical terms. Get acquainted with these, and certain terms are not as difficult as they seem. In fact they appear quite often and you should know them by now.
And there is certainly no excuse that you are not a doctor, or in anyway connected to the medical profession. Everybody should be able to used medical and scientific terms.
Use this story as an example:
Death Mars KLmMarathon
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/6/28/nation/6560017&sec=nation
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 16,500 people took part in the Standard Chartered KL Marathon which took the runners on a route from Dataran Merdeka past some of the city’s historical landmarks.
The event not only attracted marathon enthusiasts but also entire families who took part for fun.
However, the event was marred by the death of a runner, Lim Wei Yee, 25.
Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman said Lim died on his way to the hospital and that his body had been sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for post-mortem.
He said the police had yet to receive any report alleging negligence on the part of the organisers over Lim’s demise, which had been classified as sudden death.
Earlier, software engineer Toh Yit Ming, 26, said he was running his final lap on the 10km run when he saw a participant, whom he only knew as “Lim”, sitting on the roadside in front of City Hall before collapsing.
“He was having a seizure. A few runners tried to put him in a recovery position,” he said in a telephone interview, adding that he had told Lim to relax and breathe deeply as he was short of breath and clenching his teeth.
Toh said he, a doctor taking part in the event, and another participant had taken turns to apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Lim when his pulse stopped.
He claimed no medical services arrived until about 15 to 20 minutes later.
“I am disappointed that the ambulance came late when the Runners’ Guide had stated that response time for emergency medical services would be three minutes and that medical aid was available every 5km of the marathon stretch,” said Toh, adding that three City Hall officers standing nearby with their motorcycles had not bothered to help the group.
He said he had to tell a passer-by to inform the officers to call the ambulance.
Toh also alleged that when the ambulance arrived, it did not have an automated external defibrillator or a face mask with pump (to pump in more air into the lungs).
I have enlarged and coloured the "medical words". So you should be able to use the correct terminology for your essay to be effective.

Step 7: Keep your eyes and ears open Langkah ke7 selalu memerhati dan mendengar
Step 7...is to keep your eyes open and your ears finely tuned to gossips!!! Ha ha , no, not exactly gossips, I am not asking you to butt your nose into everybody's business, but to be like a journalist who has his ears trained on every bit of juicy tidbits, and his eyes peeled for eye candy!! A reporter who is the first to give breaking news will get the scoop.(Think Perez Hilton, or nearer home Beautiful Nara...they garner a lot of viewership to their blogs because they are the first to divulge juicy gossips, mostly about celebrities).
Short of rummaging into dustbins for news that people throw away, you can get stories everywhere. You can even fabricate stories and fictionalise people's names so as not to pin point on anyone!!
Or you can draw on your own wealth of experience and knowledge to create great stories. Or get your friends, teachers, parents and grandparents to tell their stories. Use these as anecdotes to spice up your writing.
Failing that, use your own fertile imagination!!! Just write, WRITE!!!
Langkah ke 7 ialah selalu peka tentang apa yang berlaku di sekeliling anda supaya dapat menulis cerita yang menarik. Anda juga boleh dengar cerita dari kawan, ibubapa dan nenek datuk, merek pasti ada lebih pengalaman dan cerita!!1

A speeding express train rammed into the back of a stationary passenger train in eastern India yesterday, killing more than 60 people and leaving 165 injured, many seriously.
The standing train was waiting to leave Sainthia station in Birbhum district, 260 kilometres north of the West Bengal state capital Kolkata, when the express train crashed into it in the early hours yesterday.
Bodies and injured travellers were pulled from the mangled mass of steel by emergency services and by onlookers who had massed at the site of the accident, the second train disaster in West Bengal in less than two months.
Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee and railway board chairman Vivek Sahai refused to rule out sabotage, but West Bengal Civil Defence Minister Srikumar Mukherjee said there was no evidence of foul play.
"It's not an act of sabotage. The tragic accident took place because of negligence on the part of the railway administration," Mukherjee said at the crash site.
Mukherjee said a total of 61 people had been killed and 165 injured, 89 of them seriously.
"The train was running at unexpectedly high speed," railway board chairman Sahai told reporters.
He said "human error could be the cause of the accident" but added he was puzzled about why the driver had not applied the brakes "even though he was very experienced" and had ignored the signalling system.
The force of the impact hurled one wagon onto an overhead passenger bridge.
Local hospitals found themselves overwhelmed by the number of victims.
"There were injured passengers writhing in pain on the floor of the emergency room unattended," Samir Nandy, who had come to look for his brother-in-law, told AFP.
In May, nearly 150 people were killed when a Mumbaibound high-speed passenger express from Kolkata veered off the tracks into the path of an oncoming freight train.
Police officials said a section of the track had been deliberately removed and blamed Maoist rebels.
At the moment of yesterday's impact, passengers recounted experiencing a violent smash before panic erupted.
"I was fast asleep on the top berth when there was this huge crash like an explosion," one passenger said. "I was flung from the berth and then people started shouting."
Most of the dead were in the rear "unreserved" carriages, the cheapest section which is usually tightly packed.
Banerjee announced compensation of 500,000 rupees ($10,500) for the families of the dead and 100,000 rupees ($2,100) for the injured.

Step 6.Turn Disasters into a Resource for Impactful Words (Gunakan Becana Sebagai Punca Perkataan Berimpak)
Turn the world's calamities into valuable resource for colourful words and phrases that have full impact. Think 2001' s World Trade Centre Bombings, 2004's Tsunami, Florida's Katrina, Australia's Bushfires, even Malaysia's flash floods and highway accidents present countless new words and are treasure trove of stylised language peculiar to that particular disaster. For e.g. you will get words like "lava flow", "cloud dust" and "seismic scale" for an earthquake or volcanic eruption.
Disasters are aplenty nowadays and accidents, bombings, crime sprees a dime a dozen. Take the latest : "Train Wreck" in Indian (Sun page 10, July 20, 2010)
here
speeding express train
rammed leaving 165 injured, many in critical condition
slammed in its rear
force of the impact
lifted one wagon clear off its track
left it mounted on an overhead passenger bridge
bodies were pulled from
crumpled mass of steel
rule out possiblity of sabotage
no evidence of foul play
negligence on part of railway administration
writhing in pain on the floor of emergency room unattended
cheapest area of train
tightly packed
section of the track deliberately removed
blamed Maoists rebels active in the state
You can see from these phrases that they are full of force...even if you do not get to read the entire story or see its accompanying picture, you can already envisage the scene in your mind.
Cut out such stories.
Underline the words.
Commit them to memory.
conjure them up when the need arises and USE them!
You will have a beautiful essay!!!!

Now, not only Greek mythology yields interesting words, the classics too, are commonly quoted and called upon to illustrate and explain situations. You have to be widely read, or at least, you can google the classics and add them slowly to your collection.
I use again the same article “Mad Max and the Narcissism epidemic”
http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/17kok/Article/
The writer alludes to
1. “Pygmalion” by George Bernard Shaw,….”but he would also work to mould her, Pygmalio-like, into a pop star”
2. Homer’s ” Illiad” for a quote :”Sweeter wrath is by far..”
3. Valentino (the great self-lover)
and you can use words like Cassanova, quixotic (from Don Quixote) which is found in another article
“Nothing Quixotic about his ideas” page 19 Nation, New Straits Time, Saturday July 17, 2010.
http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/19yang/Article/
Daniel Cerventus Lim has borrowed his name from Miguel de Cervantes, the Spanish author of Don Quixote.
He has started a successful IT business, so there is nothing quixotic about his name because of his success. (Don Quixote was a bumbling simpleton who stumbled along with his crazy ideas which did not work at all).
Pinjam perkataan dari cerita klassik kerana di sinilah terdapat banyak perkataan seperti pygmalion, quixotic, cassanova dan valentine (dari Valentino)…dan banyakl agi.

Greek mythology hold a wealth of words with meanings and allusions related to their stories and characters and these words can enrich your essay. Some of these words are so widely used, you would not be forgiven for not knowing them.
Take the July 17, 2010 Saturday New straits Times for example, for this story:
“Mad Max and the narcissism epidemic.”
http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/17kok/Article/
Mad Max of course refers to Mel Gibson, who acted in Mad Max and he is narcissistic in the sense that he left his wife to link up with a beautiful young woman and when she wanted out, he insults her and scolds her, although she had done nothing wrong at all, but because she could help in his own self-magnification.
Greek mythology is full of characters who are often linked to their virtue or vice: Hercules, Midas, Zeus…etc. and many words have connection with them.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissus_(mythology)
Gunakan perkataan dari mithos Yunani, kerana mithos ini mengandungi ramai watak yang terkenal sehingga hari ini. Contoh Narcissus, Hercules, Adonis, Zeus dan lain lain.
Anda harus tahu cerita cerita ini supaya tahu guna perkataan yang ada kaitan denga mithos itu kerana perkataan ini adalah kerap di pakai guna.

The word Narcissism originates from the character named Narcissus (which is also the name of a flower) who loves himself so much, he admires his reflection everyday in the water (no mirrors back then). So besotted was he in his own reflection that he fell in love with the handsome man who is actually an image of himself, and he died trying to embrace that image!Read more: Mad Max and the narcissism epidemic http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/17kok/Article/#ixzz0ujzhRE00

Phonics may not be for writing, but it is part of good English as well: pronouncing words correctly and in the right way. We may not have RP (Received Pronunciation) but we have the internet where you can listen to words pronounced right way for you. (I will look up the link for you)

5. Spelling Worksheets
Many believe that without phonics we would never learn how to spell or read.
Phonics is a teaching method for learning how to spell and say words using sounds and patterns. When you see the letter 'C' and know that it makes a 'k' sound like in the word cat that is using phonics. Just the fact that you can read this article right now means you have experience with phonics, and it will help you when you start to learn much bigger words like 'catastrophe'.
How did you learn this? You might remember being in kindergarten or maybe even younger with a teacher or parent. Remember learning how to spell your name or you first words? Maybe not, but it is likely you used some form of phonics to do this.
Kita tidak boleh lupa juga sebutan (pronunciation) Bahasa Inggeris yang betul juga. Untuk menggunakan sebutan yang betul, kita harus tahu “PHONICS” yang akan mengajar cara sebutan.

Kita tidak boleh lupa juga sebutan (pronunciation) Bahasa Inggeris yang betul juga. Untuk menggunakan sebutan yang betul, kita harus tahu “PHONICS” yang akan mengajar cara sebutan.

To be able to write well, you need the basics: Correct Grammar and Tenses. Once you get this out of the way, you need not worry anymore about it.
Therefore it is of the utmost importance to brush up on your grammar! No one wants to read your essay if it is full of grammatical errors, wrong tenses and worse, spelling mistakes!!!
No one can teach you grammar, you have done enough of that in primary school. so you have to help yourself.
Get hold of any grammar books, and like Mathematics, practise, practise, PRACTISE!….but unlike Maths, there is no formula to learn. Just when you thought you have mastered the rubrics, up come an “EXCEPTION”, and the English Language is full of that: Exceptions!

To be able to write creatively, first you need a plethora of words which you can play around with and with which you can use to produce a beautiful essay that
enthrals,
engages and
enthuses
your readers, making them want to read more.
I got this from a reader called Kiran who wrote:
Often it is the trouble with attitudes rather than the ability in human beings that blocks our desire to improve on English. Wordsmith.org is a world-wide community of some half-million readers who share a love forwords, wordplay, language and literature.
So I urge you too, to join Wordsmith.org
http://wordsmith.org/
and subscribe to A.Word.a.Day (AWAD).
Everyday your e-mail chime will go off and there, in your in-box, is another word to add to your vocabulary. Each week brings a different category of words.
A couple of weeks ago, the theme was collective nouns (e.g. a bevy of birds, a sounder of swine). The previous week, it was metaphorical terms which have their origins in New York.
To subscribe, all you have to do is visit wordsmith.org. It’s free and takes only two minutes to subscribe.
Untuk memperkayakan perbendaharaan kata, langkah pertama ialah memasuki website Wordsmith.org dan register ke A.Word.a.Day untuk mendapat perkataan bahasa Inggeris yang baru setiap hari. Perkataan ini adalah dalam kategori yang lain tiap tiap hari.
